Next to white sugar, aspartame, marketed under its worldwide brand, NutraSweet, manufactured by Searle Company and today owned by Monsanto Corporation, is the sweetest thief in processed foodstuffs. Since the day the mysterious gumball appeared as a free sample in mailboxes across the U.S., the addiction to this sugar replacement has exploded. Chemist James M. Schlatter discovered aspartame while he was trying to develop a drug for treating ulcers. He noticed aspartame's sweet taste when by chance he licked his finger, which had been in contact with some spilt aspartame. Schlatter immediately saw aspartame's potential as a calorie-free sweetener, though the FDA's concerns about its possible links to cancer kept it from widespread use for several years. Political arenas remained divided on the issue of aspartame's toxicity, but the result was aspartame appearing in over 250,000 snack foods on the market. Initially, aspartame was clearly indicated on the package as "sugar-free" or "containing aspartame" next to the manufacturer's name. Today, you have to study the back panel label and find the word “aspartame” in the ingredient list.
Millions of unquestioning consumers either want to lose weight or kick the sugar habit and believe that aspartame is the solution. Aspartame has been linked to cancer, brain tumors, obesity, Grand mal seizures, and a plethora of other deadly and paralyzing diseases. Read aspartame's history and health report warnings on the Internet. Shop at your local health food store, not a mainstream commercial market. Education is power and can save your life! Use only natural sweetened products with fructose, organic cane sugar, evaporated cane juice, brown rice syrup, Stevia, or natural fruit juice. Don't play games with your life. Read the label and educate yourself!
