North Americans are accustomed to dining out at restaurants and it seems that they've forgotten the essence of making and enjoying a home-cooked meal. With today's hectic stressed life, it's understandable why the convenience of a ready-made meal that is served right to your table is appealing. However, eating out at a restaurant is not always a healthy choice. Most restaurants, especially fast food, serve food that is heavy and fattening and often loaded with chemical additives and refined processed sweeteners. There is no way to have any control over the quality of your meal when you eat this way. Fortunately, there are restaurants that understand the importance of eating a delicious healthy meal. Many chefs realize that there are health-conscious people who prefer to eat foods with natural whole food ingredients, but don't have adequate time or energy to prepare their own meal at home. This is why there are many restaurants that serve only sustainable locally grown whole organic food without chemical additives. The same goes for restaurants that serve only vegetarian meatless dishes and vegan dishes. With this in mind, people rarely enjoy a home-cooked meal of their own personal effort.
The beauty of making your own home-cooked meal is that you are the one buying all the ingredients and doing all the preparing and cooking. You have complete control over the preparation of your meal without having to ask the chef 20 questions. I have been cooking my own healthy vegan meals for 15 years and I can appreciate this gift. Set some time aside for food preparation. Although it's challenging, find one activity that's least important and instead take a little time to prepare a meal or two for a few days during the week. There are some wonderful healthy cookbooks that make great guides. You'll save money and your health.

Can you recommend any particular vegan, vegetarian or "flexitarian" cookbooks? Also, do you have any advice for someone like me who cooks at home most nights but doesn't especially enjoy the experience? I'm not talented at cooking and lack the ability to improvise in the kitchen. I consider cooking more of a chore than a pleasurable activity. How can I find joy in cooking, and is it possible for me to acquire a knack for creating dishes without having a recipe in front of me?
