Another popular Halloween tradition is the well-known pumpkin or what is commonly referred to as the "Jack-o-Lantern". During the first week of October, you can already start seeing vendor stands along the roadside and in busy shopping centers, with rows and rows of pumpkins waiting to be purchased to decorate homes and businesses. The common tradition is to carve out the inside and form a wild zany face. The pumpkin is kept on the front porch, lit from the inside with usually a candle or another lighting device.
Some people discard the contents of the pumpkin, while others use and cook the contents in tasty recipes. While the pumpkin is mainly known to be a fun decoration for Halloween, it's also a food, specifically, a squash. Many people enjoy squash with various seasonings in various meals. Because many people will eat the contents of the pumpkin, it's important that the pumpkin be as safe and healthy as possible. It is for this reason that the pumpkin should be organic and completely free of harmful petro-chemical pesticide residue. Commercially grown pumpkins are heavily sprayed with petro-chemical pesticides and are genetically engineered. This is commonly known as "Franken Foods". I will explain more about GMO's in another post in the very near future. It's best to protect your health and your family's health by purchasing organic pumpkins. The flavour is stronger because the pumpkin has remained unscathed and all the nutrients remain intact. You can find organic pumpkins in your local health food store, the organic section of your local supermarket, or a local certified farmer's market. Farmers from various cities in your state bring their homegrown produce from their own garden and sell it directly to you, the consumer. Have a healthy, organic, sane Halloween.
