Asthma is a serious chronic illness that affects more than 3 million Canadians and many more throughout the world. Asthma is irritation and blockage of the lungs and airways. Various irritants in the air trigger an asthma attack, which is evident by wheezing and coughing. The two biggest triggers for an asthma attack are secondhand cigarette and cigar smoke and fragrance, which are prevalent in everyday life. Asthma should not be confused with allergies. While an asthmatic attack can be triggered by allergens in the air, such as dust and mold, they are two very different illnesses. The usual signs of allergies are sneezing, coughing, irritated watery eyes, and congested sinuses. This is not the same as wheezing, which is due to labored breathing. Lung irritants include perfume, deodorizers, secondhand cigarette and cigar smoke, fragrance personal care products and cosmetics, paint containing petroleum distillates, and household cleansers.
Pharmaceutical medications don't help an asthmatic to breathe easier. Initially, they may appear to help, but the two problems that accompany taking these medications are dangerous. When an asthmatic is exposed to these irritants, the sufferer seeks relief, but more health problems are created, including addiction. People get addicted to medication everyday and struggle to get weaned. The best way to avoid these irritants is to choose wisely where you go, preferably where you can breathe fresh clean air. It's also good to keep tools with you that help you breathe easier and feel better. I always keep these in my purse for my asthma attacks: "Olba's Natural Inhaler," which contains pure essential oils of eucalyptus, menthol, peppermint, and cajeput, and "Zand Herbalozenges," menthol flavor. These lozenges are wonderful for cooling you off on hot days and healing an irritated throat and helping you breathe easier. Never leave home without these vital life-saving healthy tools.
