Organic Candy Apples - A Healthy Halloween Treat

candyapples.jpgAnother very popular Halloween tradition is to make and eat candy apples. The historical origin of this phenomenon remains unclear, but people throughout the U.S. continue this tradition every year. Eating candy apples is okay as long as the sugar sweetener is natural and organic. The problem is that caramel is the substance that is used to make the candy apples and caramel is burnt sugar. Burnt sugar is processed refined white sugar, the same unhealthy destructive sweetener I've discussed in my posts. Heating sugar slowly to around 170°C/340°F makes caramel. You can tell that the sugar has been caramelized when the sugar turns brown, creamy, and sticky and starts boiling with rapid bubbles. Caramel may be brown and cooked, rather than white and powdery, but it's still unhealthy and harmful to your teeth.

A healthier option is to heat fructose, a natural crystalline white fruit sugar, or organic evaporated cane juice until it reaches a similar creamy sticky substance and use that to cover your apples. It may not produce quite the same result, but it will still be sweet and your health, organs, and teeth will be far healthier and safer as a result. Remember to eat organic apples that were not sprayed with toxic petro-chemical pesticides. Be kind to your health and have a safe enjoyable healthy Halloween.
