Vanilla Fruit Smoothie

Vanilla Fruit Smoothie

Yogurt smoothies are an excellent snack in the middle of a nice warm day. Ayurveda says yogurt should only be eaten during the day because of its cooling properties. In India, yogurt and yogurt lassi are an accompaniment to every lunch during hot summer days. Depending on what part of the world you live in, you might want to eat accordingly.

Yogurt is one of the best everyday foods to aid digestion. In modern terms, you hear one word over and over in reference to yogurt - Probiotics. These are the good bacteria which appear in yogurt in form of lactic acid. Here is an excellent article which lists 9 good reasons to eat more yogurt.

It is beginning to feel warmer during the day in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Today we spent an entire sunny day outside, gardening in our yard. After hours of weeding and trimming, I decided to take a break, to make this smoothie for us to enjoy in the sunshine. You can substitute any fresh or frozen fruit you have at home.

I used:
1 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (invest in organic & without any additives!)
1/2 cup freshly chopped strawberries
1/2 cup frozen mangoes
1/4 cup milk (or more if you like it thinner)
half a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
1 tablespoon dark maple syrup or honey (I only add this if the fruit are too tart!)

My method:
Add all ingredients to a blender -- except the nutmeg and the maple syrup or honey -- and pulse.
Taste it to make sure it is not bitter. If it is too tart, add the honey or maple syrup, then blend.
When it is just right, add some nutmeg, stir it with a spoon, and pour it in a tall glass to enjoy.
